Event: Pullin’
of the Greens Everyone
is invited to help with the annual spring cleanup of the arboretum
grounds. Volunteers will prune, plant, trim, spread bark, repair garden
beds, and more. When the work is done volunteers will be treated to a
tasty cup of hot soup and other treats in the Jewett Interpretive Center.

Time: Class: Rose Pruning 101 Members of the Lower Naches Garden Club,
who collectively have over 100 years of rose growing experience, will lead
this popular class on growing, caring for, and pruning roses. The first part of the class will cover
rose varieties, a discussion of common pests and diseases, and their
treatments, how to propagate roses, proper pruning techniques, and a brief
question and answer period. Then
the class will head out to the Arboretum’s rose garden for some serious
hands-on rose pruning and training.
Please bring a sturdy pair of gardening gloves and pruners. When: Class

Tree” The Yakima Area Arboretum invites everyone
to celebrate our state and national Arbor Days during the 11th
annual Arbor Festival on Saturday, April 17th from When: Time: Cost:
Free Class: Bonsai Basic Beginner Workshop Learn all about the art of Bonsai from the
Yakima Valley Bonsai Society.
Each student receives a “Miss Kim Lilac” potted in their
own Bonsai pot. Receive instruction
on plant style, design, tree placement, pot preparation, basic plant care,
repotting, and soil mixtures.
Please bring a small wire cutter, small branch pruner, and pliers. When:

The Whole Gamut of Composting for
Adults Designed
for the beginner and intermediate student, the Arboretum’s composting
workshop will take a comprehensive look at both worm and yard waste
composting. Learn the basics of
getting started, materials used, the community of organisms in the soil,
seasonal care, differentiating between the two, worm types, selecting yard
waste and worm bins, and helping to troubleshoot problems with existing

$25. Class size limited to 20 people. Event: Spring Plant Sale The Yakima Area Arboretum will be hosting
its, much anticipated, annual spring plant sale on Saturday, May 8th (9-3pm).
Arboretum volunteers and staff have scoured the northwest to bring you the
most outstanding collection of plants for our region, including the rare and
unusual. And, now is the perfect time to join the Yakima Area
Arboretum because the Friday night sale is now for Arboretum members
only, (3-7pm) meaning YAA members get first pick. Public

Event: Iris Flower & Design Show The Yakima Valley Iris Society
welcomes everyone to their annual Iris Flower and Design Show. Meet the experts, see demonstrations,
checkout specialty irises, learn about becoming a member of the Iris Society,
and more. Take a walk through the
Arboretum’s Iris Bed, with its many award winning and newer variety
plants, and have your questions answered by Iris Society members. Everyone is welcome to enter their
own irises and iris designs into the judging competition. There are separate divisions for youth
and adults competitors. Prizes
will be awarded to the top entries in both adult and youth, design and flower
divisions. Bring your entries to

the world of miniature trees!
The Yakima Valley Bonsai Society presents their annual Bonsai
Exhibit. Bonsai refers to the
training and artistic vision applied to a tree; ultimately giving the
illusion of an aged miniature tree in nature. The exhibit will feature
artistically designed alpine firs, larches, yews, and maple trees. Expect to see trees in training,
live demonstrations, stone exhibits, trees for sale, and a tree raffle. Then vote for your favorite tree! When: Hours: Cost: FREE, all are welcome. Class: Water Wise
Gardening Renowned West Valley gardener, Linda Knutson and Arboretum Co-Executive
Jheri Ketcham will be teaching this information packed class on creating a
water wise garden. Discover how easy
it is to both reduce your water usage and enhance your home landscape with
beautiful drought tolerant plants.
Jheri and Linda will touch briefly on design techniques, proper
mulching, and the basics of installing a drip irrigation system. When: Class

Composting for Kids This class is the total worm composting
package for second graders and up.
Kids will learn about the benefits of worm composting, examine all of
the components of a healthy worm bin up close, and learn how to setup and
care for their own bin. Kids will leave with everything they need to worm
compost at home, including a starter worm bin, worms, and instructional
materials. When: Class

local gardens. Each garden features a wide variety of landscaping styles,
artwork, plant solutions, specimens, and of course natural beauty!
Homeowners will be available to answer your gardening questions. All proceeds
